Why Ukraine uses bigger ships to export grain
Aug 16,2022

With the completion of the two-week trial phase, larger ships are ready to start delivering grain from Ukrainian seaports.

The largest ship to date left Crimea, carrying 64,720 tonnes of corn to South Korea. Ten ships have left Ukraine since it signed a maritime agreement with Russia last month. The Sea Lion has been stranded in Ukrainian waters since war broke out between Ukraine and Russia in late February.

Meanwhile, two empty ships are currently docked at Ukrainian ports to load more incoming cargo.

Last month, Ukraine and Russia reached an agreement to establish a 120-day secure shipping route for grain exports from three Ukrainian ports. According to details of the Black Sea Food Initiative, the vessel was inspected in Istanbul.

Ukraine desperately needs to divert 20 million tonnes of last year's harvest before this year's grain reaches cramped granaries and docks. Larger ships need to move the aging harvest out to sea faster.

The success of the first shipment could fuel the acceleration of the process. Still, the average cargo order size is still around 20,000 tonnes, according to Shipfix order data, which will require around 1,000 sailings unless larger vessels are involved in the trade.

However, not every shipment went according to plan. The first crop shipments from Ukraine's newly opened grain ports are now floating in the Mediterranean, looking for new destinations after losing buyers. The ocean cargo on the Razoni bulk carrier was rejected by the final buyer in Lebanon due to a 5-month delay in delivery. The vessel is now at anchorage in Turkey and a new buyer is being sought.
