International Cargo Logistics (ICL), a global freight forwarder, has nearly doubled the size of its cold storage facility at Heathrow Airport to meet the increasing customer demand.
Originally spanning 153 sq m, the cold storage facility has now expanded to 300 sq m. The upgraded facility comprises five chambers with varying temperature regimes, X-ray and external temporary storage facilities (ESTF), and temperature-controlled vehicles to ensure efficient transportation of goods across the UK.
In a bid to further optimize operations, the ICL Site Unit 13 facility features inspection areas for the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and a control point for customs checks and clearances, streamlining operations significantly.
“This expansion, which coincides with our 20th anniversary this year, significantly enhances our capacity to offer high-quality logistics services from our Heathrow site,” said Nick Finbow, perishables sales director at ICL.
“Our clients in the perishables sector can now take advantage of centralized, round-the-clock logistics services and access to an efficient and reliable national distribution network. This not only saves them valuable time and resources but also allows for fresher products to enter the UK food chain.
“Additionally, ICL is on track to receive BRC accreditation by the end of the summer, enabling us to serve a broader range of retailers and wholesalers.”
In March, ICL, headquartered at Heathrow, announced a collaboration with fellow UK firm FreshLinc to enhance final-mile delivery for UK airfreight. Earlier in February, ICL opened a new office in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, as part of its strategy to expand perishables operations across Europe and beyond.
The company is also planning to extend its global reach this year by expanding into Southeast Asia, starting with a new office in Vietnam.
